Characteristics
Cool season grass with a deep green color and a fine grass
bland. The upright growth habit creates a pleasing uniformity and
has rapid germination and seeding establishment.
Recommended Uses
Well adapted to cool summers and high altitudes and can do well
even in cold and arid climates. Often this type of grass is used in
mixtures with other grasses because of an ability to blend, a
frequent component of bluegrass mixtures because it grows well in
shade or drought-dry soil. When used with a warm season grass in the
South, it provides green winter color.
Temperature Tolerances
Good. It tolerates hot and cold weather well and has good winter
hardiness. It can be used in areas that are subject to widest
temperature fluctuations.
Drought Tolerances
Very good drought tolerance for a cool-season grass and can go
dormant in the Summer if irrigation is withheld and then will green
up again with the return of moisture.
Shade Adaptation
Moderate. Most shade tolerant of all grasses but needs some sun
and is the best choice for a cool season grass for dry, shady lawns.
Wear Resistance
Moderate. The grass blades are non-succulent and hardy, making
an ideal playing surface but does not recover well from severe
injury.
